Injury Surveillance as an Athletic Trainer: How to Easily and Accurately Track Injuries Using This Information to Inform and Improve Your Practice

 

Abstract:

Accurate injury surveillance is the foundation for the design, development and refinement of successful injury prevention strategies. This talk will discuss ways to easily and accurately incorporate injury surveillance methods into your clinical practice. It will detail ways of measuring athlete’s training load and relate it to injury surveillance. This talk will also discuss ways to present this information in an engaging manner to key stakeholders (athletes, coaches, administrators, governing bodies and health organizations). Key features of this presentation will be the importance of adapting preventative strategies based on the culture and target population, the maximization of buy-in and the subsequent uptake by all stakeholders.

 

 

Background:

Siobhán O’Connor primarily researches in the field of injury surveillance and prevention, with a particular interest in female athletes, community sports, Gaelic games and horse racing. She graduated in 2009 from the BSc. in Athletic Therapy and Training in Dublin City University (DCU) and is a Certified Athletic and Rehabilitation Therapist. She completed a MSc capturing training load in Gaelic footballers and a PhD examining the incidence of and risk factors for injury in adolescent and collegiate Gaelic games. She is currently an Assistant Professor on the BSc in Athletic Therapy and Training in DCU and Vice President of the World Federation of Athletic Therapy and Training. O’Connor was the Vice President of Athletic Rehabilitation Therapy Ireland (ARTI) from 2009 until 2017 and is currently the ARTI International Liaison Officer and Public Relations Officer.
